Cleaners clean. They do not tidy, and the two are different jobs. A surface covered in paperwork gets wiped around, not under. Clearing worktops, the coffee table and the bathroom shelf before a visit buys you far more actual cleaning for the same money.

Say what matters to you. Most people have one thing they care about more than the rest, and it is rarely obvious: the inside of the kettle, the balcony door tracks, the shower screen. Mention it once and it becomes part of every visit.

Point out anything fragile or off limits. A shelf of ceramics, a plant that should not be watered, a room you would rather was left alone. Nobody minds being told.

If you have pets, say so when you book rather than on the day. It changes which products get used and, occasionally, which cleaner comes.
